We finally make our way to Belem, from where we will start our adventure up the Amazon river.  We have another early start, leaving at 7 AM.  But before we head off, we make sure that we take a group picture with the family that kindly hosted us for the night.  We are also able to take a Polaroid picture, which we present to them.

Lunch on the way is at a stop at another abandoned gas station.  This time the weather looks a bit threatening, so the gas station awning would be good protection from the rain if it comes.  But we are spared the rain.

We arrive in Belem at 3:30 PM and check into our hotel.  After getting settled, we head out to check out the town.  We also go look for some supplies for our five day trip on the boat up the Amazon River.  We will need water and snacks.  In the end, we buy about thirty liters of water for the two of us.  We return to the hotel for a short while to drop off our purchases, and then head out again.

We check out the main square with the Teatro da Paz.  It is amazing to see a theater like that in a town like this.  But that is what the rubber boom funded.  We have an excellent dinner in a local place - very good steak and chips.  After that we wander the streets a bit.  We check out the (in)famous open air bar in the main square that is notorious for it's ladies of the night.  It certainly is filled with ladies that seem to be hanging out and waiting for something.  We decide instead to head back to the hotel to pack our bags for tomorrow.  When we go on the boat, we will be leaving the truck for up to ten days, so we need to pack accordingly.
